Keynsham Town caused a major upset in the League Cup 2nd Round on Saturday when they beat last year’s finalists Barnstaple Town.
The game went to spot-kicks after 120 minutes had seen the side’s level at 1-1.
Having scored early through Tom Harris, Keynsham grew in confidence as the game progressed and looked fairly comfortable throughout the first half. However, when Sam Kipling got sent off with 30 minutes remaining the game swung in Barnstaple’s favour. They took advantage of the extra man soon after and probably thought they would go on and win it, but the hard working Keynsham team had other ideas and dug in to take the game to extra time.
With just 5 minutes gone in the first period of extra time, Keynsham were forced to play with 9 men after Jordan Anstey was knocked unconscious and had to come off. With all their subs on the pitch, Keynsham re-shuffled to an unfamiliar 341 formation and set about keeping Barnstaple out. Amazingly they managed to do it and great credit to the players for working so hard and remaining disciplined to take the game to penalties.
Having missed 8-9 consecutive penalties, we were a little concerned but the first three pens flew in and we had a chance to win it with the 4th or 5th pen, but then both were missed. After several more successful penalties from both sides, Ashley Wintle then saved one and Jason Adams stepped up to win the shoot-out 7-6 for Keynsham.
It was a fantastic win for the team and having lost to Barnstaple three times last season, it again shows how far we have come since then.
