KEYNSHAM THROUGH TO QUARTER FINALS OF SOMERSET CUP.

Above a cold clear blue sky criss-crossed with vapour trails and below the shadows of the cemetary trees cast long on the Crown Fields pitch. This was the tranquil setting for the Somerset Cup meeting of the two sides.

Up front were Toby and Owen, with Max, Brendon & Adam at the back. The midfield of Ben, Charlie, Tommy and Luke were joined again by Will as there were still concerns over a number of illnesses and injuries in the camp.

In the first minute, there were breakaway chances at each end with both teams passing the ball well, with Luke making a crucial block inside the Keynsham penalty area after five minutes.

Keynsham showed good passing and movement in the centre of the park and the Keynsham defence frustrated the Backwell attack intercepting long balls and showing good composure under pressure. The Chew Valley centre midfield of Ben, Will & Tommy displayed good close passing & movement.

On 11 minutes, Keynsham were awarded a penalty for a foul on Charlie just inside the box.

Toby coolly drove the spot kick low and down the middle for a 1-0 lead.

Keynsham, playing high up the field, were awarded a number of corners all of which were nicely delivered by Luke providing a host of opportunities. Keynsham enjoyed more possession than Backwell but they could be a threat on the break and from set pieces.

Toby, showing great pace, twisted & turned past the Backwell defence and crossed the ball from the left hand side for a sliding Owen to drive the ball high into the net for a first career goal and a 2-0 lead.

Keynsham now settled and after 30 minutes there was a welcome return for Ozzie who replaced Toby up front.

At the end of the half Adam delivered a high trade mark free kick into the box and the ball fell to Charlie who had a powerful shot saved at the near post.

The half ended 2-0 with Reegan not overly troubled.

At the start of the 2nd half Luke & Owen were replaced by Harrison & Alfie, both looking to get back to 100% fitness.

Tommy again made a crucial defensive header from a Backwell free kick beating everyone else in the box to the ball.

Max, now playing further up the field, delighted the crowd with a couple of powerful shots  high over the bar that may have caused problems for low flying aircraft and damage to some greenhouse windows in Totterdown!

On 55 minutes, Toby, running into the Backwell box, was fouled and the referee (without hesitation) awarded the second Keynsham penalty of the game. This time Brendon was the taker and the kick went high and to the Keepers left for a 3-0 lead to Keynsham.

Unfortunately, half way through the half, a dynamic Luke was given a yellow card for kicking the ball away after the whistle.

To Backwell’s credit they showed great fitness & determination and pushed numbers forward even when 3-0 down and late in the game were awarded a number of corners and a free kick, that was hit low at the wall.

Reegan made a quality save with his legs from one of the headed corners that was then efficiently cleared by Brendon. This preserved a 4th clean sheet for Keynsham in seven home games this season.

With Backwell throwing numbers forward Keynsham had a number of breakaway chances at the end but the defence held and the final score remained 3-0.
